Georg Essl I.

Georg Essl I (born August 17, 1861 in Reisach im Gailtal , † January 20, 1940 ) was an Austrian businessman, entrepreneur and collector .

Coming from the simplest of circumstances, he worked his way up to a successful merchant while traveling and then in his home country, collecting local folk art . He was the founder of the Gailtaler Heimatmuseum.

His son Georg Essl II acquired Möderndorf Castle in 1982 for the collection of the Gailtaler Heimatmuseum. In 2000 the Essl family handed over the castle to the town of Hermagor-Pressegger See . The entrepreneurs Karlheinz Essl , Horst Essl and Georg Essl III. are his grandchildren.
