Georg Essl III. (Born December 18, 1931 in Hermagor , Carinthia ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and inventor .

Life

Georg Essl III. comes from a merchant family. His father Georg Essl II. (1906–1985) operated wholesale and retail trade with goods of all kinds in Hermagor. In 1958, this sole proprietorship was divided into four separate companies, one of which Georg Essl III. took over. In doing so, he continued the backpack production division that his father had built up after the Second World War. Today's Georg Essl Rucksack und Taschenfabrik GmbH in Hermagor goes back to him. The company produces and sells backpacks and bags for the hiking, mountain sports, travel, hunting and fishing, military and army, school and college, and business sectors.

At the end of the 1960s, Georg Essl III developed. "The body-friendly school bag as light as a feather". In this invention, he had gained experience in mountain hiking and making backpacks.

The new model had a number of advantages over the school bags commonly used at the time : While these were made of leather, which got soaked in the rain and increased the weight of the bag, the new school bag was made of a tear-resistant, waterproof nylon material and remained consistently light. In addition, the curb weight was lower. The bag was also easier to carry due to its portrait format instead of the usual landscape format and thus contributed to avoiding postural damage for students. The back plate was padded, the shoulder straps wide and also padded; as a result, they no longer cut into the shoulder area. The inside of the bag was stiffened. In this way, the exercise books and books were protected and spared and their weight could now be distributed appropriately. Bottom protection corners and buttons helped to protect the bag from the outside. The length of the new shoulder straps was also infinitely adjustable, while with the conventional school bags, pointed metal spikes were inserted into the perforated leather shoulder straps to adjust the length. This had the disadvantage that you could injure yourself on the metal spikes. In addition, the leather straps stretched over time and lost their strength, causing the bags to slide back and forth and subsequently affect the children's backs. The equipment of the “body-friendly school bag feather-light” with fluorescent signal colors and reflectors also increased the child's road safety on the way to school. At that time, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation reported on the development, patenting and production of this new type of school bag.

In his book "About Greed", Georg Essl III wrote that the invention for which he had registered for a patent had prompted the German company Alfred Sternjakob in the 1970s to conclude a license agreement with him for the production of his invention. The contract duration was six years. Sternjakob advertised this school bag with the brand name Scout . At the end of the six years, Sternjakob was entitled to continue producing and selling the licensed product without a license fee. The company then continued to develop and improve the basic model. To date, more than 10 million school bags have been manufactured under the Scout brand.

Other manufacturers also imitated this new type of school bag after the expiry of patents and property rights. The lightweight school bags subsequently established themselves on the German-speaking market and replaced the conventional ones made of leather.

Others
