Satchel from Scout

Scout is a registered trademark of Alfred Sternjakob GmbH & Co. KG , based in Frankenthal (Palatinate) . To date, over 10 million school bags have been produced under the Scout brand .

history

The Scout was introduced in 1975. It is based on an invention of the Austrian Georg Essl III. back. The main difference compared to the leather satchel that was widespread at the time was the lower weight due to the use of textile fabric and, above all, the use of fluorescent orange-colored fabric and locks with "cat eyes". The latter changes increased the visibility of the students in the morning traffic, which in turn served to avoid accidents.

Stiftung Warentest

The models in the Scout collection are repeatedly tested by Stiftung Warentest . Current results of the satchel test in issue 3/2013: Scout Buddy Basic: overall grade good (2.3), Scout Nano Basic: overall grade good (2.4), Scout Mega Basic: overall grade good (2.4), Scout Buddy Style-Set: Overall rating Poor (5.5), Scout Mega Style-Set: Overall rating Poor (5.5), Scout Nano Style-Set: Overall rating Poor (5.5). The Stiftung Warentest criticizes the lack of security of the defective models, since these models do not have fluorescent light surfaces. A total of 18 school bags were tested.

Collections

The manufacturer currently offers four collections under the brand name Scout : Genius, Ultra, Alpha and Sunny.

In the case of the Scout “Non-DIN” school satchel series, fluorescent orange warning surfaces and thus the safety-relevant requirements of DIN 58124 were dispensed with for optical reasons.

Matching school supplies such as sports bags and purses are available for all designs and series.

Litigation

In 2009, the manufacturer tried unsuccessfully to prohibit a Berlin retailer from selling scout items cheaply through online auction houses such as Ebay in order to protect the high-priced level of its brand.
