history

Scout satchel 2005

The company was founded on October 1st, 1934 by Alfred Sternjakob in Pirmasens , at that time a center of the leather industry , and initially produced work gloves and leather bags. After a short time it was moved to Frankenthal. Gustav Schickedanz from the Quelle mail order company was one of the first customers .

In 1975, Scout, the first lightweight school satchel, was developed and launched on the market at a unit price of 49 D-Marks. The new textile satchels were also copied by other manufacturers and quickly replaced the leather copies that had been common up until then. The German Historical Museum in Berlin added a Scout satchel from the 1995 collection to its Everyday Culture department.

In 1990 Alfred Sternjakob's son sold the company to Fritz Steinmann in Nuremberg. As a result, the 4You brand was established, which, in contrast to the Scouts, which are mainly used by children, offers satchels, rucksacks and bags for young people. More than ten million light school satchels had been produced by 2006. In the same year, the market share in Germany was 40 percent.

On October 1, 2017, the location of the subsidiary Alfred Sternjakob GmbH & Co. KG in Frankenthal will be closed and all activities will be pooled in Nuremberg. Since then, the brands Scout , 4YOU, DerDieDas, OXMOX and iKON have been managed by Georg A. Steinmann GmbH & Co. KG from Nuremberg.
