Gaius Fannius (historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Fannius († shortly before 106 AD) came from the Roman plebeian family of the Fannier and was a court speaker and historian.

Gaius Fannius was a friend of the younger Pliny , who commemorates him in a letter. In this letter, which was not written before AD 106, Pliny gives a necrology to Fannius. Accordingly, Fannius worked, as far as his professional career allowed him, as a historian and he designed a representation of the life and end of people who had been persecuted and condemned by Emperor Nero . This historical work, which was apparently appreciated by contemporaries, was entitled Exitus occisorum aut relegatorum and comprised three books. Fannius had planned a larger volume of this writing, but he did not live long enough to be able to realize this intention.
