Helmuth Croon

Helmuth Albrecht Croon (born January 2, 1906 in Krefeld ; † February 24, 1994 there ) was a German historian and archivist .

life and work

Croon, the son of a factory owner, was active in the youth movement . In 1914 he became a member of the Köngener Bund . In 1927 he joined the German Freischar group . He was also a member of the Academic Guild / Academic Freischar Köngen Berlin.

From 1924 to 1928, Croon studied history and economics in Tübingen , Königsberg and Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1928 under Fritz Hartung with a thesis on status and taxes in the Jülich-Berg district in the 17th and 18th centuries. From 1929 to 1932 he was a member of the Historical Commission for the Province of Brandenburg and Berlin , for which he Kurmärkische stalls files processed. As a pupil of Hartung, Croon was in charge of the 19th century department from 1930 and, from 1932, also the newly formed department “Modern Constitutional History ” for the annual reports for German history published by Hartung and Albert Brackmann . In 1933 he published a short German constitutional history in the 19th and 20th centuries in an Italian anthology. The National Socialism was Croon against "friendly".

In August 1933, Croon joined the voluntary labor service , later the Reich Labor Service , as a clerk . He worked in Lingen (Ems) and Aachen until the end of 1942 , most recently as Oberstfeldmeister for special tasks at the Cologne-Aachen Arbeitsgauleitung. In January 1943 he took over the management of the archive of the Reich Labor Service and was appointed Labor Leader in 1944 .

After the end of the war, Croon was interned in 1945/46 and then a laborer in Krefeld. From 1950 to 1955 he worked as a research assistant at the Dortmund Social Research Center . In 1956 he became a consultant at the Federal Archives in Koblenz . In the same year he took over the management of the Bochum City Archives , where he worked until his retirement in 1971. On May 9, 1963, Croon became a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . In 1965 he was given a teaching position for administrative history and archival studies at the Ruhr University Bochum and in 1971 a teaching position for social history at the TH Aachen . In 1971 he was also appointed honorary professor at the Ruhr University.

With his studies on the composition of the municipal administrations of the cities in the Rhineland , in the Ruhr area and in Westphalia , Croon significantly shaped the social history research in this area. Since the 1960s, he also announced a monograph on the Reich Labor Service without ever submitting it.
