Gaius Valerius Gracilis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Valerius Gracilis was a member of the Roman knighthood ( eques ) living in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD .

A military diploma shows that he was in command of the Cohors III Campestris in 124 AD , which at that time was stationed in the province of Dacia superior . In the diploma his name is written as Gracilius , but it is probably a typo. His origin is given in the diploma Caesarea ; It cannot be determined which of the numerous Caesarea it is.

Gracilis is probably identical to the prefect of the Ala I Bosporanorum , who is mentioned in an inscription found at Micia in Dacia . The management of the Cohors III Campestris is therefore likely to have been his first military command ( militia prima ), while the command of the Ala I Bosporanorum was probably the third stage of his military career as part of the Tres militiae .
