The Gallery Weekend is an event of renowned Berlin galleries that every year on a weekend around May 1st invite collectors, curators and art enthusiasts from all over the world to a gallery tour in Berlin . The focus is on the exhibition openings of the participating galleries on Friday evening, which are accessible to all art lovers. The Gallery Weekend Berlin explicitly focuses on the gallery space as a condensate of the art business: art creation and market, exhibition location and viewer come together. Throughout the weekend, the galleries attract visitors with their program with extended opening hours.

development

Founded in 2005 as a private initiative of Berlin galleries, in 2013 around 50 galleries show their exhibitions with international artists. The organizers see it as their task to secure and further expand the internationalization of the Berlin location. The participating galleries reflect the multifaceted nature of an art scene which, thanks to the long-term commitment of various galleries, has changed from the vacuum of the 1990s to a structured scene. They show the spectrum of an art city that has a special meaning within the international gallery scene and as a production location for numerous artists exhibiting worldwide. The Gallery Weekend is open to innovations: in 2012, more young galleries were accepted and promoted. The Gallery Weekend is growing in importance every year and has established itself as one of the leading events for contemporary art.
