Gallo (Italian for cock ; Arabic القالو, DMG al-Qālū orالديك / ad-Dīk / 'the rooster') is a Tunisian rocky island in the Mediterranean . It belongs to the Galite Islands and is the largest and highest island in the Galitons de l'Est ( Les Chiens ) group.
Gallo consists of a single rock, 8.52 hectares in size and 119 m from the sea, and drops steeply towards the water. An almost 100 m long indentation on the northeast side, which extends almost to the center of the island, is remarkable. Gallo is 240 m northeast of the significantly smaller Pollastro rock and 650 m northeast of the Gallina rock, which is about half the size . Together, the rocks form the Galitons de l'Est , which are part of the Galite Islands . Gallo is 1.9 km northeast of their main island La Galite . The Tunisian mainland is 42 km to the south-east.
98 meters off the north-west coast of Gallo there is a rock measuring 54 × 19 m. Whose northern peak at 37 ° 33 '40 " N , 8 ° 57' 16" O is the northernmost point of the Galitons de l'Est, the Galite Islands, Tunisia and all of Africa . However, since the rock is not named, Gallo is the most northerly named point on the African continent. The island is roughly on the same level as Seville , Catania or Sparta .
