Gambero Rosso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Italian publisher Gambero Rosso (German: Red Cancer) is a company that is mainly known for the book "Vini d'Italia". This work, which appeared for the first time in 1988 and has been annually since then, is considered the most famous wine guide for Italian wines . In the media, the Gambero Rosso is only mentioned briefly and today it is the undisputed standard work for Italian wine. Gourmetverlag also publishes an important restaurant guide, the "Ristoranti d'Italia" (23rd edition, as of 2013).

Vini d'Italia: evaluation scheme

The wines are tasted and rated in blind tests by independent experts. Wines listed in the Gambero Rosso are already considered wines of above-average quality, wine glasses are awarded for quality labeling:

  • "Good" wines receive "a wine glass"
  • "Very good" wines receive "two wine glasses". Since the 2002 edition, wines that were allowed to take part in the final selection for "three wine glasses" but did not receive the "three glasses" have received "2 red glasses"
  • Top marks for "exceptional" wines are "three wine glasses"
  • Since the Gambero Rosso 2011 there has been a selection of 3-glass wines for less than 15 euros. With this, the tasters of the Gambero Rosso want to prove that good wine does not have to be really expensive.
  • In the Gambero Rosso 2010 and 2011 there were also the “3 green glasses” and the “3 glasses plus”, a personal selection by the publisher Daniele Cernilli. It was abolished because of his departure.

The Gambero Rosso has about 1,000 pages, about 2,350 wineries with about 20,000 wines are listed. Around 400 wines are given the coveted “3 glasses” award every year. The complete wine guide is completely rewritten every year.

Ristoranti d'Italia: rating system

The restaurant guide awards between 60 and 100 points for a restaurant. In addition, one, two or three forks ( forchette ) are awarded for the best restaurants . In the 2013 edition, 21 restaurants rated in 2015 were awarded the highest rating of three forks.
