Gamelan Gong Kebyar
Gamelan Gong Kebyar is one of the most important contemporary musical styles in Bali . It differs from other styles of gamelan through its very high virtuosity. The word kebyar probably suggests this, because it means something like “to suddenly flare up” or “to burst”.
The instruments of the Gong Kebyar developed at the beginning of the 20th century are essentially based on the large court orchestra Gong Gede . Individual instruments have been replaced by others with greater flexibility and greater pitch, so that more virtuoso playing is possible. The orchestra plays new compositions and old ones in a new style.
The instruments of the ensemble are:
- Metallophone with wooden case: Gangsa (Kantilan, Pemade, Ugal, Calung, Jegogan, Penyacah)
- Kettle gong games: Trompong, Reyong
- Gongs : Kempli, Kempur, Gong Gede
- Kendang , a double-headed drum struck with the hands
- Cengceng: small hunched pelvis
- Rebab : petty sounds
- Suling : bamboo flute
