Street in Gamle Stavanger

Gamle Stavanger is a district of the Norwegian city of Stavanger .

It is located on the west bank of the port of Vågen in the north-western part of Stavanger city center.

history

The name Gamle Stavanger means Old Stavanger in German . There are a number of historic wooden houses in the district. The district has a total of 173 listed buildings. The oldest surviving building is the Blidensol house, which was probably built at the beginning of the 18th century in Øvre Strandgate , the first documented mention of which dates back to 1767. Blindensol was part of a farm to which most of the land in the area belonged. Other houses were built at the end of the 18th century after the city fire of Stavanger in 1760. However, the majority of the houses were built between 1820 and 1860. The living space of the small houses, originally mostly used by fishing families, is only between 27 and 80 m², whereby the buildings were partly used by two families.

In 1948 the city of Stavanger intended to demolish the area in order to create an industrial area. However, the city architect Einar Hedén campaigned for the preservation of the district and the designation of monument protection . After proposing a restoration of 33 houses in 1951, a majority of the city council approved it in 1956. In 1957, an association for the preservation of the old town was founded under the chairmanship of Hedén. The number of listed buildings was increased to 79 in 1964, until a project to protect the entire area began in 1979. Today (as of 2017) the district is practically completely renovated. The predominantly white painted buildings are used for residential purposes or as shops or workshops by artisans. The city of Stavanger pays grants to the residents of the district to enable the preservation of the houses in the historical style.

A square in Gamle Stavanger was named Einar-Hedén-Platz in honor of the city architect . The Norwegian Tin Museum is located in the center of the district . The old Gamle Tollbod customs office is facing the harbor . At the northeastern end of Gamle Stavanger stands the monument to Admiral Thore Horve . At the southern entrance to the district is the Lars Lende statue, reminiscent of the philosopher Lars Lende (1882–1971) .
