The Gandhi Smriti , previously known as the Birla House or Birla Bhavan , is a museum dedicated to Mohandas Gandhi , the former Indian lawyer, political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement . It is located on Tees January Road in New Delhi , India . Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life here before he was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Originally it was the home of Indian business magnates, the Birlas. It has served as the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum since 1995.

The building was acquired by the Indian state in 1971 and opened to the public on August 15, 1973 under the name of Gandhi Smriti (or Gandhi Commemoration ). The museum in the building displays many items related to the life and death of Gandhi. Visitors can tour the well-preserved rooms where Gandhi lived and the spot in the garden area where Gandhi was shot.

The "Martyr's Column " now marks the place where Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation" , fell victim to the assassination attempt.

The museum is located on 5 Tees January Marg , a few kilometers from Connaught Place, the "heart" and central business center of New Delhi.
