Twist
The twisting of the fiber structure when spinning a yarn is called yarn twist . This rotation is necessary to give the fiber structure a cohesion. The rotation can take place in the S or in the Z direction. The number of twists (turns per meter (T / m)) is determined on one meter of yarn length. The designation of a yarn with “300 Z” means that the yarn was twisted or spun with 300 turns per meter in the Z direction. More twists, up to a certain limit, tend to mean a more tear-resistant yarn, but one that also has a harder feel and a smaller volume. The direction of rotation and the fiber material, together with the respective twists, cause the so-called twist in the single yarn. Also filament yarns and rovings often receive rotation.
