Church of the Immaculate Conception of Mary

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Polish Kościół Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszego Maryi Panny ) is a neo-Gothic church building in Kolobrzeg in West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland . It was built in 1832 and was a Protestant garrison church and, from 1945, a Roman Catholic parish church. Since 1994 it has belonged to a house for emeritus priests.

history

Previous buildings

In 1545 the Catholic Benedictine convent was moved to this place. In 1630 the monastery and church were destroyed in the Thirty Years War. In 1649 a new church was consecrated, which was built on the initiative of Ernst Bogislaw von Croÿ . In 1653 it was converted into a Protestant garrison church soon after the city was handed over to Brandenburg-Prussia.

Today's church building

In 1832 a new church was built in neo-Gothic style. It was surrounded by some barracks. After the Kolberg Fortress was abolished in 1872, the character of the community changed.

The church survived the Second World War without major damage, like three other churches in the city. As early as 1945 it was rededicated as a Roman Catholic parish church with the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. There was a convent of Franciscans at it, which moved to the Holy Cross Church in 1973 . In 1975 the then Cardinal Karol Wojtyła visited the church on the occasion of the 975th anniversary of the former Kolberg diocese .

In 1994 it was handed over to the dormitory for priests emeritus for use.

Architecture and interior design

The church is a hall building made of red bricks in the neo-Gothic style.

Inside, galleries and church stalls have been restored to their original appearance. The organ was built in 1947 and rebuilt in 1968. It has 14 registers.

One bell is from 1898, making it the second oldest in the city.
