Garrison churches (Koenigsberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Königsberg garrison churches served the military pastoral care of the Königsberg garrison in Prussia .

After 1670, Colonel Johann von Hille had the first garrison church built in Königsberg in the Friedrichsburg Fortress , which he commanded . When it was no longer sufficient for the Königsberg troops, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Holstein-Beck proposed in 1731 that a church for three regiments be built on the eastern part of the Königsberg parade ground . The building was stopped in 1736 because of the wet ground . The Königsberg City Theater was built on its foundations from 1806 .

It was not until 1816 that the Königsberg General Command managed to make the castle church available to the troops .

The church in the fortress Groß Friedrichsburg existed until 1859 and was demolished in 1892.
