Location of the Gasa Dzong in the Gasa Mountains

The Gasa-Dzong , also Gasa-Tashi-Tongmön-Dzong , near the city of Gasa is the administrative center of the Gasa district in northwestern Bhutan . The monastery fortress was built in the 17th century by Tenzin Drukdra , the second desi of Bhutan. Before that, there was a meditation place at this point, which Drubthob Terkungpa had founded in the 13th century . The dzong was built as a bulwark against attacks from the north. It was later expanded by the fourth Desi Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye .

The dzong lies on a slope facing east. Unlike other dzongs, the Gasa Dzong has an approximately circular shape with three watchtowers called Ta Dzong at strategically important points. The three-storey Utse , the central tower of the Dzong, was built directly above the cave in which, according to legend, the Tibetan saint Drubthob Terkungpa is said to have meditated.

In January 2008, the Gasa Dzong was badly damaged in a fire. In the summer of 2014, the reconstruction work began with the support of the Indian government and should be completed by 2018. At the end of 2016, the Serto was attached to the Utse . Work on Drasha , the monks' living quarters, Tshokkhang , the two- story dining room, the district administration building and Gasalamai Singye Zimgchung , the residence, is progressing well. The woodwork has been completed and the masonry has started.
