Gassensensationen is an international street theater festival in Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse.

The first street theater festival Gassensensationen took place in Heppenheim from 10. – 13. July 1993. Since then, the series of events has shown artists and ensembles from all over the world every year. The spectrum of performances ranges from street and plaza productions to shadow play , stilt and puppet theater to performance and comedy . In-house productions and art projects in the field of street theater , which are specially staged for the alley sensations, have been a regular part of the festival since 1994. All events take place with free admission. The organizer is the city of Heppenheim . The artistic director of the alley sensations is Stefan Behr.

The festival takes place after the first weekend in July from Wednesday to Saturday. The squares of the historic old town and the local open-air stage are used. Every year more than 25,000 visitors visit the around 50 events. The alley sensations are financed from public funds, sponsorship money and grants from a development association.

Theater Anu emerged from the festival in 1998 and is now one of the most important German street theater groups. From 2001 to 2004, the Heppenheimer Laternenweg was created as part of the festival: 150 silhouettes show motifs from Hessian legends on the street lamps in the old town. The lantern path can be visited all year round. Guided tours take place every Saturday from May to September.
