Gasthof Sternen (Wettingen)
The Gasthof Sternen in Wettingen is located in the monastery area and describes itself as the oldest inn in Switzerland . The timber frame house is located north of the monastery church. It is under cantonal monument protection .
history
The origins of the inn go back to the founding of the monastery in 1227. In order to give the monks' mothers and sisters in particular the opportunity to visit, an inn was built, which was initially called the “women's house”. It was outside the monastery walls, as women were not allowed to enter the monastery area, but it was connected to the inner monastery gate. With the abolition of the monastery in 1841 , the building came into the possession of the canton, but it still houses an inn today, which is called Sternen , based on the monastery name "Maris Stella" .
