Martin Durm

Martin Durm (born July 9, 1959 in Rodalben ) is a German radio reporter and foreign correspondent . He has received several awards for his reports from the Middle East.

Life

Durm studied politics and German in Freiburg . After an internship at the Rheinpfalz daily newspaper , he moved to the Süddeutscher Rundfunk Regionalstudio Heidelberg in 1986 as a reporter, in 1988 to the SDR 1 state editorial office, and in 1999 to the Zeitfunk editorial team for the political magazine “Südfunk aktuell”. From 1996 to 2001 Durm worked as an ARD radio correspondent in Cairo.

He then became deputy editor-in-chief at SWR1 until, from 2006, he reported on the EU as a correspondent from the ARD studio in Strasbourg. In 2011 Durm moved to SWR2 as a reporter and moderator.

Arabic spring

Since 2011 Durm has repeatedly reported on the revolts and civil wars in the Arab world for ARD, especially from Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Iraq and Syria. He received the prestigious Liberty Award for his radio feature "Syrian Inferno - A Civil War Escalated". Against the background of the escalating civil war, Durm described the fate of his local contact, with whom he and the ARD television correspondent Jörg Armbruster were traveling in Aleppo in the spring of 2013 during the Syrian war. The Liberty Award is endowed with 15,000 euros. It is intended to honor reporters and correspondents who go to crisis areas to provide first-hand information about grievances and who set standards with their reports.
