Gaston Zeller

Gaston Zeller (born March 9, 1890 in Belfort , † October 3, 1960 in Paris ) was a French historian.

He was first a high school teacher in Metz and Strasbourg, taught in Clermont-Ferrand and from 1933 in Strasbourg. During the Second World War he moved to Clermont-Ferrand with the University of Strasbourg. In 1946 he became professor of modern history at the Sorbonne .

He became known early on for his book - at the same time his dissertation - on the incorporation of Metz into France, in which he also shared the view of a French foreign policy in the 16th and 17th centuries, which was widespread on both the German and the French side, of a French foreign policy in the 16th and 17th centuries - at the same time his doctoral thesis Rejected 17th century. The work of around 900 pages established his reputation and opened his university career. Later he dealt mainly with the history of diplomacy, administrative history, the history of the 16th century, Alsace and Franco-German relations.

He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor . Zeller received the Prix Gobert (for La reunion de Metz), the Prix Marcel Flach (for L´Alsace Francaise de Louis XIV a nos jours), the Prix Thérouanne and the Prix Drouin de Lhouys.
