Handwriting of a Gaussian letter

The Gauß letter database is an online database that contains all 7668 letters from and to Carl Friedrich Gauß (as of January 29, 2018). In 2016 the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen set up a portal for the Gaussian letter database, which can be accessed online (see web links ).

The database also contains the larger correspondence that is available in printed form, including the correspondence between Gauß and Bessel , Bolyai , Gerling , Humboldt , Lindenau , Olbers , Schumacher and Zimmermann . It also includes the private letters that Gauss exchanged with members of his family, but not the letters between members of the Gauss family.

The following information is provided with each letter:

  • Letter data: names of the letter partners, letter date and place of dispatch
  • Location of the manuscript / copies
  • bibliographical information about prints / partial prints
  • Reproduction of the handwriting in picture format
  • Reproduction of the print version in picture format or transcription of the manuscript in text format
  • alternatively / additionally a brief table of contents

The basis of the Gaussian letter database is a database of the science and mathematics historian Menso Folkerts , who also provided the letter data and a large part of the transcriptions. The database is developed and maintained on behalf of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences by the Digital Library department of the Göttingen State and University Library . Some of the digitized manuscripts were made available by the Göttingen Digitization Center and the Braunschweig City Archives .
