Gaudí (musical)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaudí is a musical whose plot is based on the story of the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí . The piece is musically based on the album of the same name by The Alan Parsons Project from 1987, which was written by Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons .

Performances

The musical was developed in 1992 by Eric Woolfson, produced by Claus Schmitz and staged by Elmar Ottenthal . Horst Krämer was responsible for the lighting concept . Despite the German production, the lyrics of the songs are in English. The entire music was produced by Eric Woolfson in the studio and played back for the actors as half-playback . The play had its world premiere on October 9, 1993 at the Aachen Theater . Because of its great success, the piece was commercially exploited from 1993 to 1996 in Alsdorf and from 1996 to 1997 in Cologne . The Musical Dome was built on the banks of the Rhine for the Cologne performance . Its blue basic color goes back to the conceptual color scheme of this musical.

Between 2006 and 2008 the musical experienced a new edition in the Palladium in Cologne . This adapted and newly cast production was led by John Cashmore , who originally played Don Parker, and his wife Kaybee Cashmore. Gallissas has held the performance rights for the musical since 2008, and now Woolfsongs Ltd.

The Austrian premiere took place on October 30, 2014 in Linz / Upper Austria as a production of the Theater in der Innenstadt with Cordula Feuchtner as Isabella, Nik Raspotnik as Don Parker, Wolfgang Sailer as Mark Winner and Michael Schefts as Antoni Gaudí in the Tabakfabrik Linz.

action

The writer Don Parker receives the Gaudi Award for his works, a prize for particularly creative achievements. He thereby attracts the attention of the unscrupulous film producer Mark Winner. He wants to acquire the film rights to Parker's novel, which Parker refuses. Parker is a great idealist and does not want to sell his art or step into the limelight, much like his great idol Gaudí, with whom he feels connected.

Winner then puts his attractive friend Isabella on Parker so that he falls in love with her and lets her persuade her to give up the rights after all. His plan works, but Isabella cannot reconcile the double game with her conscience in the long run. She also falls in love with Parker. She confesses everything to Parker and returns to Winner. Parker is badly hit and decides to break away from his great role model Gaudí and go his own way from now on. Symbolically for this step, an old man who reminds Parker of Gaudí is hit by a train.

The real Antonio Gaudí was hit by a tram in 1926 and succumbed to his injuries.
