Gavin Andrew Stuart Newlands (born February 2, 1980 in Paisley ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Newlands was born in 1980 at Paisley Maternity Hospital but grew up in Renfrew and lives there to this day. He attended St James' Primary School as well as the local Trinity High School . A study at James Watt College he broke off because of an offered promotion. Newlands is married and has a father of two.

Political career

Newlands joined the SNP youth group as early as 1992. In 2011 he was elected to Renfrew City Council.

In the British general election in 2015 , Newlands ran for the SNP for the mandate of his home constituency Paisley and Renfrewshire North . He also ran against incumbent Labor MP Jim Sheridan , who has represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since it was introduced in 2005 . With the massive gains in votes by the SNP in these elections, Newlands won the majority with 50.7% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In Parliament, Newlands is a member of the Backbench Business Committee . Despite losing votes, Newlands defended his mandate in the early general election in 2017 .
