Gavutu is an island in the Florida Islands in the Central Province , Solomon Islands . Its greatest dimension is about 500 meters.
After its capture in 1942, the Japanese Navy set up a seaplane base on the island. During the landing phase of the Battle of Guadalcanal , the island and its neighboring island Tanambogo were on 7/8. Occupied by US Marines August 1942.
