The birth register is the civil status register of a registry office up to December 31, 2008 for the children born in its area of responsibility. The entries in the birth register are the basis for issuing the birth certificate .

The birth register has various functions. On the one hand, it officially documents the birth of a child and is the basis for issuing birth certificates . The death of the notarized person is also recorded in the birth register. For this reason, the numbers of the will files kept at the registry office are also entered in the birth register.

As with the marriage and death books , at the same time as the birth is certified by the registrar, certified copies of the birth entries are made and bound to the " second book ". The second book is collected at the district office or the district administration . Significant subsequent entries in the first book must also be preserved in the second book. If the first book is lost, the second book is declared the first book. A new second book is then created by copying.

Due to a personal status law reform, the birth books in 2009 from January 1 birth certificate called. In principle, these must be kept in electronic form ( Section 3 (2) of the Personal Status Act). During a transition period from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013, a guided tour in paper form was still possible.
