Marriage book

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The marriage register was the civil status register of a registry office in Germany, which was kept until December 31, 2008 and was used to certify marriages .

The marriage book was the bound collection of the marriage records and the basis for the issuing of marriage certificates by the registrar. The following were entered in the marriage register:

  1. the first and last names of the couple, their occupation and place of residence, place and date of their birth and, in the case of their consent, their legal affiliation or non-affiliation with a church, religious society or ideological community
  2. First and last names of the witnesses , their age, occupation and place of residence
  3. the declaration of the couple
  4. the saying of the registrar.

As with the birth and death books , at the same time as the marriage was notarized by the registrar, certified copies of the marriage entries were made and bound to the " second book ". The second book was collected at the district office or the district administration . Significant subsequent entries in the first book also had to be preserved in the second book.

Due to the civil status reform law , the marriage books have been replaced by marriage registers since January 1, 2009 . In principle, these must be kept in electronic form (Section 3 (2 ) of the Personal Status Act ). During a transition period from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013, a paper tour is still possible.
