Thomas Carlyle's birthplace

The birthplace of Thomas Carlyle is a residential building in the Scottish village of Ecclefechan in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . The essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle was born there in 1795. The house may have been built by his father and uncle in 1791. In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The two-story building is on the High Street , the main thoroughfare of Ecclefechan. It is divided into two individual residential units and has an unusual design. The masonry consists of quarry stone and is limed along the facades. The north-facing front is five axes wide. In the center there is a doorway with a pressed round arch with a keystone . Wooden entrance doors flank it. These were only used in these places at a later date. Originally the house was entered through doors on either side of the arch interior. A plaque above a door shows the year of construction 1573, but it comes from another building. A Venetian window is set above the arch . The back of the building is no longer in its original state. There wings were added or converted in the 19th and 20th centuries.

A small museum has been set up in the western part of the building, where Calyle was born. The interior has remained largely unchanged since the museum opened in 1881. It is furnished with furniture and private items from the Carlyle family. In addition to dealing with the historian, it also offers an insight into a typical household of the Victorian period . The building is owned by the National Trust for Scotland , which also runs the museum. With Carlyle's House in London , where Carlyle lived in later life, there is a second museum that deals with the life of the historian.
