The prison Ålesund ( Norwegian Ålesund Fengsel ) is a prison in the Norwegian city of Alesund .

It has 27 detention places and is located in the eastern part of Ålesund city center on the island of Nørvøy in a corner at the intersection of Kipervikgata and Rådstugata at Kipervikgata 16 . To the northeast, diagonally on the other side of the intersection, is the Ålesund bedehus .

Architecture and history

The building was erected in 1864. During the fire in Ålesund in 1904, the building burned down, but the walls were preserved. At the time of the city fire, 14 prisoners were in prison. After the officer on duty realized that the fire would spread to the prison, he opened the doors and told the prisoners to flee, but to come back the next day.

The old prison was then included in the new construction and reopened as a prison in 1906. In 1907 a new representative building was completed, which served as a court and council chamber. It is oriented with its entrance door to the north to Kipervikgata. Above the door there is an imperial lion . The entrance area is spanned by a triangular gable.

However, since the 1980s the seat of the court has been on Aspøy . The court wing is now used as the prison's administration building. The prison has been rebuilt and modernized several times. Nevertheless, it is considered out of date and its function is to be replaced by a new building in Digernes .
