Santa Ana prison

The Santa Ana prison (or Centro Penitenciario de Occidente) is a prison in the Venezuelan state of Táchira .

The prison was built in 1978 for 850 inmates. There are currently around 1963 prisoners there.

Violence in prison

In 2007, around 30 people died in riots there. 21 people were killed there in 2010 and 31 people in 2011. In July 2012 the director of the institution was killed along with her husband.

According to several non-governmental organizations , eight people were killed and over fifty seriously injured on May 30, 2014 .
