Prisons for homosexual men are at the center of a wave of persecution against homosexuals in Chechnya in 2017. Men held in the prisons are said to be subjected to torture. Journalists and human rights organizations speak of over 100 abducted people and several dead. Even before reports about the prisons, the situation of members of sexual minorities in the Chechen Republic was often described as particularly critical and persecution was also criticized internationally.

Wave of persecution 2017

A wave of persecution and detention of homosexual men began in February 2017. After police arrested a drug addict in Argun and found information about homosexuals on his cell phone, the men identified by these data were also arrested. Gay Pride Parades in Russia, but not in Chechnya, were registered for the beginning of March and provoked homophobic counter-demonstrations. Their agitation is believed to be another cause of the continued persecution of homosexuals in Chechnya in March. Over 100 men were reportedly taken to secret prisons. The prisoners were tortured and information about other, actual or alleged homosexuals was extorted. Men who were released were handed over to their families with the request that they kill the men. At least three of the victims were killed.

Prisons

According to Novaya Gazeta , the men were taken to prisons, which an eyewitness compared to a concentration camp. One of the secret prisons was said to be near the city of Argun, and another in Zozin-Yurt, south of the Chechen capital of Grozny. The existence of the prisons has been confirmed by Radio Svoboda, Human Rights Watch, The Guardian and Vice.

In May 2017 it was reported that the building in Argun had been buried under demolition rubble and the prisoners had been relocated to a new, unknown location. Investigators say the prisoners were likely transferred to a special police training base in Terek, about 60 kilometers from Argun. The right to visit was denied because training is supposedly taking place there.

Russia and Chechnya deny having knowledge of the prisons.
