Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane prisoner transport wagons were special passenger coaches for moving prisoners between prisons in Italy.

Like most of the larger railway administrations, the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane kept prisoner transport wagons ready during the period when the railway was the main means of land transport . The last series was put into operation in 1954 and classified as “Kz” (after the wagon label: “K”).

23 copies were built based on four-axle express train passenger cars. The cells are arranged in the middle and accessible via two external side passages. They took 45 prisoners. At each end of the car there was a lounge and a total of nine seats for the security personnel. There were also two toilets.

Only one vehicle has survived, no. K (z) 48622. Today it belongs to the collection of the Railway Museum of Apulia and is exhibited in its open-air site. It has been painted in its current gray color since the 1960s. It was delivered in the usual color scheme for passenger cars at the FS at that time, in a dark brown paint with a light brown paint for the ribbon windows.
