Prisoner collection transport car of the Deutsche Reichsbahn
The prisoners collecting trolley Deutsche Reichsbahn was DDR -times a special coaches of the genus cm for installation of up to 90 prisoners between prisons. Like its predecessors, the vehicle was called the Grotewohl Express by the inmates . Otto Grotewohl was the first Prime Minister of the GDR from 1949 to 1964.
prehistory
Due to wear and tear and increasing demand, the GDR interior ministry ordered four prisoner collection transport vehicles from the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), which were manufactured from 1980 to 1982.
Equipment and technical data
Raw Halberstadt took over the production of the car body shell , the bogie came from VEB Waggonbau Görlitz . The Brandenburg penal facility in Raw Potsdam did the interior work. They were painted by VEB Lacke und Farben Leipzig.
These wagons were based on the four-axle type “Halberstadt” of the type Bmh 721 of the DR and were 26.4 m long and 2.8 m wide.
In the interior, the GSTW had 18 cells, an isolation room and a toilet for prisoners; A writing and storage room, a lounge, an utility room, a kitchen, a relaxation room and a private toilet were provided for the members of the prison system.
The journeys were exhausting due to the limited space. Up to five people, years later reduced to four, had to share the approx. 1 m long and 1.34 m wide cells. The windows were fitted with frosted glass and barred.
Remains in the GDR after reunification
The use of the GSTW in the GDR ended with the fall of the Wall . On January 1, 1994, the vehicles became the property of Deutsche Bahn . At the instigation of former prisoners of the Bautzen correctional facility , the last surviving car was placed under monument protection and restored. This was initially located on the premises of the Leipzig freight yard and can now be viewed in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial .
