Walking cast

Applying a walking cast on the lower leg

A walking cast is a closed, padded plaster cast that is applied to the lower leg or the entire leg of a patient. In contrast to a plaster cast , the patient can step on with the foot in a cast , depending on the medical indication with the aid of forearm crutches . A walking cast is used when immobilization is necessary, but a certain amount of stress and mobility is possible.

Either a walking tunnel or a walking plaster heel is modeled on the sole of the plaster cast as a walking aid . With both options, the patient can put the broken or injured foot on the floor and therefore move on two legs. There is also the option of using an outsole or walking sole. This is strapped to the plaster of paris with the walking surface facing downwards to the floor using Velcro fasteners . The outsole is often used in combination with a plastic plaster of paris. In the past, a walking tunnel was almost always used for walking casts, but outsoles have been used for some time, the advantage of which is that the patient can roll the foot almost normally .
