Andrei Slawow Toschew ( Bulgarian Андрей Славов Тошев ; born April 16, 1867 in Stara Sagora , † January 10, 1944 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian politician , diplomat and prime minister .

biography

Studies and diplomatic career

Toschew initially studied at the universities of Edirne , Geneva and Paris , which he graduated in 1891. He then worked as a teacher at the Bulgarian male high school in Thessaloniki as well as at schools in Varna and Sofia .

In 1903 he was elected a member of the National Assembly, where he represented the constituency of Bitola . Two years later he entered the diplomatic service and initially represented Bulgaria as ambassador to Montenegro from 1905 to 1906 . He then became ambassador to Greece and from 1908 to 1913 in Serbia . In this function he played a key role in the creation of the Balkan Federation . This military alliance was concluded in 1912 between the Balkan countries of Serbia, Bulgaria , Montenegro and Greece to partition the remaining Ottoman provinces in Southeast Europe . The Balkan Federation opened the First Balkan War in October 1912 .

From 1913 to 1914 he was ambassador to the Ottoman Empire , before he represented Bulgaria as ambassador to Switzerland during the First World War and to Austria-Hungary from 1917 to 1919 . After the war he was finally ambassador to the newly founded Republic of Austria from 1919 to 1920 .

Prime Minister from 1935

In the following years he was mainly active as a writer and, as before and during his diplomatic career, published several books.

After the military coup of the right-wing authoritarian organization Sweno ( Schäkel ), which was founded in 1930 and consisted mainly of officers , against the government of Nikola Muschanow in May 1934 and the subsequent military governments of Colonel Kimon Georgiev and General Petar Ivanov Slatew , he was defeated on April 21, 1935 Tsar Boris III. appointed Prime Minister. In this role he formed a cabinet consisting entirely of civilians.

After the elections to the National Assembly, however, he handed over this office to Georgi Kjoseiwanow on November 23, 1935 .
