Hartmut Wekerle

Hartmut Wekerle (born May 30, 1944 in Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German neuroimmunologist at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology .

Life

Wekerle studied medicine at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where he also received his doctorate. As a postdoctoral fellow he worked at the Weizmann Institute for Science (Israel) and at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg. Here he completed his habilitation and became an adjunct professor of immunology. From 1982 to 1987 he headed the clinical research group for multiple sclerosis in Würzburg, before he was appointed director at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in 1988. In 2011 he retired , but continues his research as part of a senior professorship at the Hertie Foundation at the Max Planck Institute.

Scientific focus

Hartmut Wekerle's work deals with the causes and mechanisms of diseases that arise from a conflict between the immune and nervous systems - and in particular with multiple sclerosis .

Hartmut Wekerle made a number of important discoveries. Among other things, he managed to prove it

  • potentially auto-aggressive immune cells in the healthy immune system (Schlüsener & Wekerle, J. Immunol. 1985) ,
  • the special organization of the immune response in the nervous system (Fontana et al., Nature 1984) , and
  • the role of B-lymphocytes in autoimmune reactions of the nervous system (Krishnamoorthy et al., J. Clin. Invest. 2006) .

Volunteering

In the context of his international contacts, Hartmut Wekerle has shown numerous voluntary commitment. The scientist has been a member of the board of the Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research of the German Cancer Aid since 1995 . In this task, he stimulates the global dialogue between researchers and experts.

Wekerle is also a member of the medical advisory board of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society .
