The Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) in Freiburg im Breisgau is an interdisciplinary research institute of the Max Planck Society . The current research framework of the MPI-IE covers various areas of modern immune and developmental biology , including the evolutionary origin of the immune system , the development of lymphoid organs, signaling processes through antigen-receptor complexes, host / pathogen interactions, developmental signaling pathways, the regulation of gene expression and the chromatin structure , cell-cell interactions and cell differentiation . This research should help to elucidate the mechanisms of formation and function of the immune system and other biological structures. It was founded in 1961.

Name and structure

On December 1, 2010, the name of the institute was expanded to include epigenetics , which has been an important research focus at the institute since 2006 and whose connection to immunobiology should be made visible to the outside world.

Directors at the institute are (as of the end of 2015): Asifa Akhtar (chromatin regulation), Thomas Boehm (development of the immune system), Rudolf Grosschedl (cellular and molecular immunology), Thomas Jenuwein (epigenetics) and Erika L. Pearce (immune metabolism). The institute consists of 14 independent research groups with a total of 345 employees. The external scientific member of the institute is Michael Reth , who is a full-time professor at the University of Freiburg.

International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS)

The institute operates the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular and Cellular Biology together with the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . An IMPRS is an English-language doctoral program that allows a structured doctorate. The spokesman for the IMPRS on the part of the institute is Rudolf Grosschedl.
