Erika L. Pearce
Erika L. Pearce (born 1972 in New York City ) is an American cell biologist and immunologist . Since 2015 she has been the head of the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 2018 she received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for her work in the field of metabolism and inflammation research, with a focus on T lymphocytes .
life and work
Erika L. Pearce was born in New York City in 1972. She studied biology at Cornell University , where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998. She then worked on the identification of the role of a key transcription factor for CD8 T cell effector functions and metabolic reprogramming , which is important for the development of T storage cells is.
In 2005 she received her PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania . Her dissertation was entitled Developement of CD8 T cell responses . From 2009 to 2011 she worked at the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake , New York, after which she went to the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis , where she was first assistant professor and later associate professor from 2011. Erika Pearce has been director at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg im Breisgau since 2015 , where she heads the department of the Institute for Immune Metabolism. According to her own statements, her research at the Max Planck Institute focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that control immune reactions, with a particular focus on how the metabolism controls this process.
She is a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the Journal of Experimental Medicine and a member of the editorial board of the journals Cell and Cell Metabolism . She is also on the Steering Committee for Immunometabolism at Janssen Pharmaceuticals , external member of the Supervisory Board of the Immunology Network of GlaxoSmithKline and on the Scientific Advisory Board of ImmunoMet Therapeutics .
