A Second Look is an album by jazz guitarist Vic Juris . The recordings were made on 2002 at Mountain Rest Studio, New Paltz, Ulster County , New York and released on April 9, 2005 on the Mel Bay Records label.

background

Starting with Roadsong (1978), Vic Juris recorded a number of albums under his own name until 2018. In the mid-2000s, the guitarist worked as a sideman with musicians such as Giacomo Gates , David Liebman , Loren Stillman , Bill Warfield and Jeremy Steig . During this time Juris recorded another album under his own name; he played in trio and quartet line-up with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Tim Horner and with David Liebman (tenor and soprano saxophone) as a guest on some of the pieces.

Juris recorded five original compositions, in addition to the title track also "Barney K.", a tribute to the late jazz guitarist Barney Kessel . Among the foreign compositions belonged to Keith Jarrett's "Shades of Jazz" (a title from the album Shades (1976), with Dewey Redman , Charlie Haden , Paul Motian , Guilherme Franco ), the musicals "So in Love" by Cole Porter (from Kiss Me , Kate , 1948) and a song by Victor Herbert from 1919, “Indian Summer”, originally a piano piece.

reception

Scott Yanow gave the album four (out of five) stars in Allmusic, writing: “Among the other more memorable pieces is a swinging rendition of 'So in Love', a strange re-harmonized ballad version of ' All the Things You Are ', a rare one Revival of Keith Jarrett's 'Shades of Jazz' and the bossa nova number 'Little Brian'. The dry tone and the subtle creativity of Juris are a matter of course at first, but become more attractive with every listen. "

According to Russell Carlson, who reviewed the album on JazzTimes , in addition to the skill and flexibility of a virtuoso guitarist, Juris has apparently acquired a sense of humility over the course of his career that leads him to give up any impetus for the flashy stuff he sure is out of his instrument, disregard. Its subtle sound with a touch of reverberation and chorus makes its melodies into sound fields that are dreamy and never crave attention. The author also praises the pieces Juris wrote; Although he doesn't often play a catchy melody, his composing is still fascinating because the lines don't resolve as expected. He and his bandmates keep finding ways to fill the music with a feeling of mystery and amazement.

Richard Cook and Brian Morton , who gave the album a 3 (out of 4) star rating in their Penguin Guide to Jazz , think A Second Look is not the guitarist's best record, but Liebman's contributions made it worth listening to. According to the authors, the highlights are “Dizzy”, “Barney K.” and the title track.
