International Max Planck Research School
An International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) is a structured doctoral program that is jointly organized by one or more Max Planck Institutes and a university . At present (as of the end of 2011) there are 61 International Max Planck Research Schools in Germany in the fields of biological-medical, physical-technical and humanities, social and human sciences, and there is one IMPRS in the Netherlands .
history
In 1999 the Senate of the Max Planck Society decided to found IMPRS. This was preceded by intensive coordination with the University Rectors' Conference on the IMPRS concept. With the help of the IMPRS, the conditions for doctoral studies in Germany should be improved and also become more attractive as a research location for young international researchers. In their joint Memorandum of Understanding in 2008, the HRK and the MPG describe the IMPRS as a successful model and therefore call on other universities and MPIs to apply for further IMPRS.
