The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology ( English : "Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology" MPICE) is based on the Beutenberg campus in the Thuringian town of Jena . In March 1996 the Max Planck Society founded the institute in the university town to conduct basic research. Research focuses on the relationship between plants , the insects that eat plants and their environment. The main focus is on chemical interaction, which is examined by the eponymous chemical ecology . The managing director is currently David G. Heckel .

Around 170 scientists, including numerous doctoral students and students, work in five departments and five research groups.

  • Molecular Ecology Division headed by Ian T. Baldwin
  • Biochemistry department headed by Jonathan Gershenzon
  • Evolutionary Neuroethology Division headed by Bill S. Hansson
  • Entomology department headed by David G. Heckel
  • Natural Product Biosynthesis Department headed by Sarah O'Connor
  • Emeritus group Bioorganic Chemistry under the direction of Wilhelm Boland
  • Max Planck Research Group Predators and Poisonous Prey under the direction of Hannah Rowland
  • Max Planck Research Group Extreme Events under the direction of Huw S. Groucutt
  • Research group sequestration and detoxification in insects under the direction of Franziska Beran
  • Research group olfactory coding under the direction of Silke Sachse
  • Research group Physiology of Plant Defense under the direction of Axel Mithöfer
  • Research group biosynthesis / NMR under the direction of Christian Paetz
  • Research group for mass spectrometry / proteomics under the direction of Aleš Svatoš
  • Max Planck Fellow Group Interaction in Plankton Communities under the direction of Georg Pohnert

International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS)

The MPI for Chemical Ecology is involved in the International Max Planck Research School "The Exploration of Ecological Interactions with Molecular and Chemical Techniques" in Jena. Further partners in the IMPRS are the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology in Jena. The IMPRS is an English-language doctoral program . The spokespersons for the IMPRS are Jonathan Gershenzon and Ralf Oelmüller. The IMPRS is in turn part of the "Jena School for Microbial Communication", which was founded in 2006 and comprises three doctoral schools.
