Wilhelm Boland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Boland (* 1950 ) is a German chemist.

Scientific career

After receiving his doctorate with Lothar Jaenicke on the subject of synthesis of multifidenes and related structures (1978) and his habilitation (1986), both at the University of Cologne , Boland received a C3 professor for organic chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe in 1987 . From 1994 he was full professor for bio-organic chemistry at the University of Bonn . Since 1996 he has been Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology and Head of the Bioorganic Chemistry Department (Emeritus since 2018). In 1998 he was appointed honorary professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

In his research, Boland deals with the defense chemistry of leaf beetles and the induced plant defense . Interactions of microorganisms with plants and insects are further research topics in his department. In addition to the development of new methods for analytical and synthetic chemistry, he is dedicated to the mechanisms of the sequestration of plant metabolites by leaf beetle larvae and generally to the detoxification of plant metabolites in the intestines of insects.
