Bill S. Hansson (born January 12, 1959 in Jonstorp , Sweden ) is a Swedish neuroethologist . From June 2014 to June 2020 he was Vice President of the Max Planck Society .

Life

After studying biology at Lund University , Hansson received his doctorate in ecology in 1988 . From 1989 to 1990 he worked as a postdoc at the University of Arizona . In 1990 he became junior professor, from 1992 associate professor, and from 2000 to 2001 professor of chemical ecology at Lund University. From 2001 he was Professor and Head of the Chemical Ecology Department at the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU) in Alnarp . In 2006 he was appointed Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology , where he heads the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology . Since 2010 he has been honorary professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

Hansson investigates the neuroethological aspects of the interactions between insects and between insects and their host plants. The focus of his research is the olfactory perception of insects. Understanding how semiochemical information (scents) are detected by the insects' antennae and passed on in the brain, and how the perception of smell controls the behavior of the insects, is of central importance. He also compares these systems with other arthropods (Arthropoda) living on land , such as the palm thief ( Birgus latro ), a type of crustacean on Christmas Island .
