Beutenberg Campus 2012

The Beutenberg Campus is a location for science and research in Jena , which is located in the south of the city. In 1950 the physician Hans Knöll founded the first biomedical research facility in Beutenberg, which from 1970 was run as the Central Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy (ZIMET) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . As early as 1982 the first physically oriented institute was located at Beutenberg. After the political change, an interdisciplinary science center was established on the recommendation of the Science Council.

Nine institutes of the Leibniz Association , the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Society as well as the State of Thuringia and the Friedrich Schiller University are located on the campus (a list of the institutions can be found below). Two start-up centers, the Jena Technology and Innovation Park and the BioInstrumentezentrum, accommodate more than 50 companies. In addition, Wacker Biotech GmbH has established itself at this location with the manufacture of biotechnological products.

The Beutenberg Campus offers an interdisciplinary knowledge and technology platform for working on innovative research fields. Under the guiding principle Life Science meets Physics , a competence center for research and development has been established in which areas of biology , ( natural product) chemistry , environmental research and medicine with the physics of optics , photonics and optical microsystems ideally complement each other.

In total, there are more than 3,000 employees on campus, including more than 1,350 scientists. In addition, numerous domestic and foreign doctoral students are trained on the Beutenberg as part of international graduate schools in close cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. The annual budget for research is more than 170 million euros, of which around 50% is obtained through third-party funding (as of 2017). Between 1991 and 2013, the Free State of Thuringia, the federal government and the EU invested more than half a billion euros in expanding the infrastructure.

Beutenberg Campus Jena e. V.

The research facilities located on the Beutenberg Campus established themselves in 1998 in the Beutenberg Campus Jena e. V. merged. The non-profit association forms the platform for strengthening cooperation, for a coordinated external presentation and for the development of joint and innovative strategies to create synergetic added value. For example, the association annually awards the science prizes for life sciences and physics to young scientists. It regularly organizes public lectures by outstanding scientists (“Noble Talks”), provides the public with a comprehensive, generally understandable picture of its scientific and technical activities and represents the interests of its members vis-à-vis those responsible for politics.
