Geißfußveredelung (goat's foot grafting ) is a type of plant grafting that is mainly used in fruit trees. It is a process to connect two unequally strong processing partners. This type of finishing is an independent process in the implementation through cutting technique and finishing time. Goat foot refinement can be carried out by hand (excavated documents) in winter, and also outdoors with rooted documents (February - April). It should be noted that when hand finishing in winter, both finishing partners are in hibernation and are not yet driven. In the case of outdoor refinement, the base can already be driven. However, the vines should be cut in winter and stored in a cool place until they are processed so that they do not sprout.

During the implementation, the base, which is cut off in contrast to the slab , is thrown off to the desired length with good scissors or a fine saw (low trunk, middle trunk, high trunk) and then cut with a sharp knife. Then an approximately 3–4 cm long wedge is cut out from top to bottom with two oblique cuts (goat's foot). Then you take a noble rice with 3–5 eyes and cut a counter wedge with two oblique cuts. The wedge of the noble rice should fit exactly into the interface of the base. It must be ensured that the green layers ( cambium ) of the bark of both refining partners have no space and are completely connected. The finishing principle applies: cambium on cambium.

When both finishing partners are joined, they are wrapped with raffia or with a rubber band and tied together. All interfaces are then covered with tree wax. When refining the rooms, the refined documents are now wrapped in soil or compost and stored in a frost-free, not too warm room until spring. If no more severe frosts are to be expected, they can be transplanted outdoors.

In the spring it will show whether the refinement has been successful, because then the eyes of the noble rice should gradually sprout, which can form a small crown by the summer months.

Since you do not need to be able to remove the bark for goat's foot refinement, it can be carried out as early as the end of January or beginning of February when the heavy frosts subside. This means that the vines can be cut straight from the tree and used immediately, provided they are not yet driven, and there is no need for costly cool storage.

Goat's foot grafting is very popular in the processing of cherry trees .
