The Geleitschenke , also known as Köstritzer Schwarzbierhaus , is a historic restaurant in the old town of Weimar in Thuringia . It is housed in a historic, listed half-timbered house at Scherfgasse 4, which was built during the 16th century.

history

The building was erected in 1547 as a residential building and warehouse for a Weimar forest merchant . With the displacement of woad by indigo , the economic situation deteriorated not only in Weimar, but in all of Thuringia. After the town hall fire in 1837, the house was acquired by the city and part of the administration and the council cellar were housed in it. The half-timbering was plastered and only exposed again after the Second World War . The Zum Wallgraben restaurant was housed in the house until 1958 . After that, the guest rooms were used as storage. The building was renovated after 1999.

architecture

The escort tavern consists of three parts of the building. The main building stands with the eaves side parallel to Scherfgasse. The gable points to the Geleitstrasse. The half-timbering is slightly irregular and the gable is decorated with a large number of St. Andrew's crosses . The eaves side is provided with swords . The two side wings, arranged perpendicular to the main building, are kept simpler. The dining room with 60 seats is provided with wooden beams. There are also two side rooms with 20 seats each. Also noteworthy is a wooden room on the upper floor, the so-called councilor's room. The ceiling and the joist is decorated with stucco.

use

Today the escort tavern houses a restaurant and boarding house. The small space in front of the house is used as a beer garden. There is a terrace behind the house.
