Gene Viale (* 1946 ) is an American gospel singer .

Career

He started his professional gospel career in 1964 when he joined the James Cleveland Singers. This made them the first integrated gospel group, because Viale was a white man. After his military service in 1965, he made records with various groups and choirs and went on tour with them. He performed in front of mostly African American audiences, including the famous Apollo Theater in New York .

He recorded his first solo album in 1968 for Checker Records , a sub-label of Chess Records . (What Color is God? Checker LP 10054) Due to a change in the management of Checker, there was never a second LP. Some songs that were intended for the LP can be found on "Gene Viale-The Early Years".

In the 1970s he went on tour in Europe and reached people of different faiths with his performances and gospel. In 2007 he performed in Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa. He has appeared and made recordings with most of the greats of gospel music, including Miss Albertina Walker-The Caravans, Mahalia Jackson , Doris Akers, Sondra Crouch and others.
