Generation (technology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A (technical) generation is a set of devices, drugs or the like that is “under development at a certain level, characterized by a certain type of conception and construction” . Such generations are often numbered, e.g. B. Wostok 1 , Golf 1 etc. One speaks then of " series " or "models" (previous model, successor model). Software development stages are called versions .

Generations of copies

In the case of reproduction techniques in which further copies can be made from one copy, e.g. B. film , magnetic tape , photocopy , one speaks of copy generations . The original is always the 1st generation, the copy the 2nd generation, the copy of the copy the 3rd generation etc. Usually the number of generations is kept as small as possible in order to minimize the loss of copying , i.e. the loss of information due to technical imperfections of the process.
