Genetic operator

As genetic operator are operators designated by which evolutionary algorithms work (EA). With EA, solutions for optimization problems are sought using principles of natural evolution . The mechanisms with which individual solution candidates are changed are called genetic operators. In the literature, selection mechanisms are often also counted among these, although they do not actually change genetic material , but rather select individuals from a population.

In a broad sense, genetic operators can therefore be summarized as follows:

  • Mutation , the change in a candidate for a solution,
  • Transformation, the storage of genetic material from a central pool in a solution candidate,
  • Recombination , the combination of several solutions into a new and
  • Selection , the selection of solutions from the population, either for recombination or to determine the new generation.

Like the general functional principle of EA, all genetic operators have biological models: mutation , transformation , recombination and selection .
