The General Bank of Greece is a commercial bank based in Athens. The former branch bank of the Greek armed forces is majority owned by the Piraeus Bank .

history

The bank was founded in 1937 by a pension fund of the Greek armed forces, the name was Γενική Τράπεζα της Ελλάδας (English General Bank of Greece), from January 26, 1963 shares of the bank are traded on the Athens Stock Exchange. In 2004, the armed forces separated from the majority stake, which was sold to Société Générale . The bank has 149 branches in Greece.

On October 19, 2012, the previous majority shareholder Société Générale announced the sale to Piraeus Bank . The Geniki Bank will be retained as a brand.
